A look at history

The Handball Sport Verein Hamburg has a storied history marked by both highs and lows. Founded in 1999 as Handball Sport Verein Lübeck, the club initially acquired the Bundesliga license of VfL Bad Schwartau. Following the dissolution of a joint venture, the team relocated to Hamburg in 2002. Under coach Bob Hanning, the club achieved its first notable successes, including a fifth-place finish in the 2003/04 season and reaching the DHB-Pokal final.

A turning point came in 2005 when the club faced turbulence after the arrest of main shareholder Winfried Klimek. Andreas Rudolph stepped in, steering the HSV to both financial stability and sporting success. From 2006 onwards, the team secured several titles, including the DHB-Pokal and, most notably, the Champions League in 2013. However, financial difficulties culminated in bankruptcy in 2016, leading to the club's withdrawal from the Bundesliga.

Rebuilding began in the third division, and by 2021, the team had fought its way back to the Bundesliga. HSV Hamburg stands as a symbol of resilience and determination, with its eyes set on an ambitious future.

Review of the previous season

The 2023/24 season of Handball Sport Verein Hamburg was marked by both highs and challenges. Under head coach Torsten Jansen, the team began the campaign with ambition but faced early setbacks due to injuries and inconsistent form. Despite these obstacles, the squad displayed resilience, particularly in their home games, where they secured crucial points. Key players like Casper Mortensen and Jacob Lassen stepped up as leaders, while young talents such as Leif Tissier made a name for themselves with impressive performances.

A standout moment of the season was the thrilling home victory against record champions THW Kiel, a game that electrified the fans and highlighted the team’s potential. By season’s end, HSV Hamburg secured a respectable mid-table finish, though a lack of consistency dashed their playoff aspirations. With a strong emphasis on team development and a solid foundation, the club looks forward to the next season with optimism.
