2026 World Cup Qualifiers – Germany starts in Group A

The North American mission begins: In September 2025, the German national team will start qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico for the first time. After advancing in the UEFA Nations League, Germany was drawn into Group A, where it will face Slovakia, Northern Ireland and Luxembourg.
The starting position is clear: only the group winner qualifies directly for the World Cup. The runner-up must go into the play-offs, where more strong opponents and two decisive matches await in March 2026. The DFB team will kick off on 4 September 2025 with an away match against Slovakia, followed by a home match against Northern Ireland on 7 September.
With the expanded World Cup format of 48 teams, there are 16 starting places available for Europe, three more than before. But the road to get there remains challenging. National coach Julian Nagelsmann is relying on continuity and fresh impetus to lead the team to the World Cup after the 2024 European Championship final.
